Malaysian Grand Prix, November 2006

Report from Sepang

With soft rock anthems playing over the tannoy and a light rain stippling the racetrack, the boys from Team Zerro lined themselves up in the one-two slots on the grid with all to play for and nothing to lose in the final race of the year.

Damien Dash had a solid start from the off, with the Zerros leading into the first corner, but Mehatte Mecoate took second place and then first as he roared past Damien into a commanding lead.

Jock Saway pulled up neck-and-neck and Mehatte craftily tried to block him going into the second bend, but the teen sensation wasn't going to be foiled that easily and stole P1. Whitey roared though the pack and rammed Jock up the backside, but at least he was back in second place now, although his engine was already beginning to suffer in the Malaysian heat.

Coming towards the fourth corner, he managed to slip ahead of Jock, then immediately lost his lead again; while at the back of the pack world championship contender Antonio Wasp was making his way forward through the traffic methodically.

Whitey was in the lead again out of the fourth, but Jock was riding his shoulder hard into the fifth. Out of nowhere Paddy O'Doors overtook two cars to pull level with the duelling leaders.

In the sixth corner Jock reclaimed pole from Whitey, with Paddy close behind. But in the next corner Whitey erupted, cementing his lead but damaging his engine further while locking his wheel and shredding his tyres coming out of the penultimate bend of the first lap.

Simultaneously Damien managed to pull a rabbit out the hat and claim second place in the eighth bend, before Jock slipped by him on the first bend of the second lap.

Meanwhile at the back of the pack, it almost appeared as though the Team Clover boys had lost the will to race as they lost ground dramatically, but their hopes must picked up when it was announced that the front three cars were all out of brake fluid!

A tactical gear change allowed Whitey to steal back the lead in the third corner, and tensions ran high as the cars were visibly crumbling before people's eyes as the drivers hammered them to the limit and beyond. With corners to go, Whitey had no brakes, tyres, brake fluid or engine to speak of - he was flying on guts and fumes - but luckily for him Jock, in second, was in a similar way. And that's when the teen sensation's luck ran out and his inexperience showed: he spun and crashed out on the seventh, rolling into the sand trap ... but walked away unscathed!

Whitey then cautiously slowed into the final bend - as he had a secure lead now - although Paddy just managed to slip ahead of Damien and stymie dreams of a Team Zerro one-two finish (and Team Zerro taking the constructor's championship: 87 to 86 points!).

Malaysian Grand Prix, November 2007

Report from Sepang

Although this race was all about the duel between Jock Saway and Mehatt Mecoate, it was Damien Dash who got off to a flying start from the grid and Whitey Whitehouse who led into the first bend, with Mehatt behind him. Jock took the lead coming out of that bend, overtaking Whitey and with Antonio Wasp tight on his tail.

Mehatt came through in a high gear, stealing P1 and roaring off towards the second corner. Jock fifth geared through the second bend, overtaking Wasp and Mehatt and followed by Whitey.

The Team Flamers boys and Mehatt blocked the third corner as they raced neck-and-neck and Mehatt's engine started to smoke. Jock burned through all his brake fluid going into the fifth corner but then hit the sweet spot though that corner and the two subsequent ones that form a challenging S-shape down the back of the course.

Wasp held second place until Mehatt snatched it back in the sixth bend.

Jock sailed into the pits in top gear, changed his tyres and extended his lead, proving that sometimes it pays to burn rubber!

Mehatt caught up to Wasp in the penultimate bend of the first lap as Paddy O'Doors' engine started to smoke and Damien slipped further back in last place.

Whitey roared into third place in the back straight, nosing past Wasp in sixth gear. Mehatt finally took the lead from Jock thanks to a miraculous pit stop. Mehatt and Jock clashed in the second bend as Dash pitted from last place.

Whitey took the third corner in fifth gear in an effort to keep up with the leaders, but Mehatt was already pulling away from the main pack as Paddy burst thorough to take third.

Jock continued to chase Mehatt through the last bends, but became disheartened as he realised he had let Mehatt and his championship hopes slip away from him. Mehatt's engine was on fire as he came out of the last bend and took the chequered flag, with Paddy making it a Team Clover one-two.
